John Owen came to Texas in a covered wagon with his young wife and family in the late 1840's. The family settled near Athens in Henderson county. John served in the 20th TX Cavalry Co. E. (and later co. F) as a sergeant during the Civl War. John was the miniser of the Primitive Baptist Church for many years. He is buried in the Cryer Creek cemetery, along with grandson Johnny W. Phelps and other family members.

[John's death date was listed as the 31st of Nov.,

which is impossible since Nov. only goes up to 30

days. It is possible that he could had passed on the

1st of Dec. and was mis-written as the 31st of Nov.]

In 1851, John, Ascenith, and their family, left

Alabama and headed for California, traveling in a

wagon caravan with several other families, but

changed their plans and stayed in Texas after seeing

it. They settled in Henderson Co., Texas, near the

town of Athens. John, and his family moved to Navarro

Co. sometime after the 1880 census.

John served in the 20th Texas Cavalry in Company E,

and then later in Company F, as a sergeant during the

Civil War.

OBITUARY FOR JOHN WADE OWEN


Elder J.W. Owen was born in Randolph County, Alabama

and came to Texas in 1850 and settled in Henderson

County.

He professed a hope in 1854, but did not join the

church until 1859, at which time he joined The Pilgrim

Rest Church, was liberated to preach, and in July 1869,

he was ordained to the full work of the ministry. He

was chosen moderator of the Union Association on

October 1883, and served till Oct 8, 1892, when on

account of failing health he was compelled to retire.

Brother Owen was strong in the faith once delivered to

the Saints. He traveled far and near preaching the

Gospel of Christ. His last sermon was preached at Big

Creek Association in October 1, 1895 when he fell, in

the stand, while preaching. He died in January 1896 in

full faith of Immortality after the Grave.
